(I think there many peole also wonder how does it swing too.
so I add more information and some photo of the giant swing (Sao Ching Cha).

History

The Giant Swing was originally constructed in 1784 in front of the Devasathan shrine by King Rama I. During the reign of Rama II the swing ceremony was discontinued as the swing had become structurally damaged by lightning. In 1920 it was renovated and moved to its current location in order to make space for a gas plant. The ceremony was again performed until 1935, when it was discontinued after several fatal accidents.

The last renovations were done in 1959, and after 45 years of exposure to the elements the wooden pillars were showing signs of serious damage. A major reconstruction began in April 2005. Six teak tree trunks were used. The two used for the main structure of the swing are over 3.5m in circumference and over 30m in height. The remaining four are used for support and are 2.30m in circumference and 20m in height.[1] The swing was taken down in late October 2006 and the work finished late December of the same year. The rebuilt swing was dedicated in royal ceremonies presided over by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej in September 2007. The timbers of the original swing are preserved in the National Museum.

In 2005, the Giant Swing, together with Wat Suthat, was suggested as a future UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Swing Ceremony

The Ceremony of Tri-yampawai or the Swing Ceremony was one of the 12 royal ceremonies held in each of the months of the Thai lunar calendar in the Sukhothai kingdom. Originally held in the first lunar month, it was moved to the second lunar month in the early Rattanakosin period at the beginning of the 19th century. The ceremony was a Bhramin new year’s ceremony and lasted for 10 days.

According to an ancient Hindu epic, after Brahma created the world he sent Shiva to look after it. When Shiva descended to the earth, Naga serpents wrapped around the mountains in order to keep the earth in place. When Shiva found the earth solid, the Nagas moved to the seas in celebration. The Swing Ceremony is a re-enactment of this story.

Admiration this giant swing is one of 10 activities not to be missed in the Rattanakosin Island.

The Giant Swing (Thai: เสาชิงช้า, Sao Ching Cha) is a religious structure in Bangkok, Thailand, Phra Nakhon district, located in front of Wat Suthat temple. It was formerly used an old Brahmin ceremony, and is one of Bangkok's tourist attractions.

Phra Bat Somdet Phra Poramintharamaha Chulalongkorn Phra Chunla Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua (Thai: พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาจุฬาลงกรณ์ฯ พระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว), or Rama V (20 September 1853–23 October 1910) was the fifth monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri. He was known to the Siamese of his time as Phra Phuttha Chao Luang (พระพุทธเจ้าหลวง - The Royal Buddha). He is considered one of the greatest kings of Siam. His reign was characterized by the modernization of Siam, immense government and social reforms, and territorial cessions to the British Empire and French Indochina. As Siam was threatened by Western expansionism, Chulalongkorn, through his policies and acts, managed to save Siam from being colonized. All his reforms were dedicated to Siam’s insurance of survival in the midst of Western colonialism, so that Chulalongkorn earned the epithet Phra Piya Maharat (พระปิยมหาราช - The Great Beloved King).

Many Thai people still follow the 12 Year Lunar Cycle. It probably originated from Chinese Astrologers in about the 6th century AD and was adopted by many Buddhist countries in Asia,including Thailand,where it is an integral part of Thai culture.They believe that there are 12 auspicious animals, one for each of the 12 years, and that the people born in each of those years will have certain characteristics of those animals.Legend has it that on the Buddhas last day on this Earth he invited all the animals but only 12 came, so to reward them he named a year after each of the twelve.

2009 is the year of the Ox. 2010 will be the Year of the Tiger.

The Golden Mount or Phukhao Thong is located in the compound of Wat Srakes. It was built in the reign of King Rama III, succeded in the reign of King Rama IV, and completed in the reign of King Rama V.The top mostpart is about 100 meters high, and the base is 500 meters in diameter.

Khon(Thai: โขน) is the most stylised form of Thai dance. It is performed by troupes of non-speaking dancers, the story being told by a chorus at the side of the stage. At first, i intend to take a night shot to post for a theme day: night only one shot and then i change my mind because when i standing on revolving roof deck on the 84th floor,look around BKK , as for me -Thai people who live in BKK and see it every day, still remain think "BKK is very stunning"

The Chakri Group was built and resided in by King Chulalongkorn, Rama V (1868-1910).

Only the reception portion is now used, consisting of two wings for reception purposes decorated with galleries of portraiture. In between is the central throne-hall now used for various purposes and formerly for the reception of foreign envoys on the occasions of the presentation of their credentials. It is aptly decorated with four canvasses of diplomatic receptions.
